Free CDA Certification Online: How to Get Your CDA for Free
Free CDA certification online, explained: the $525 Council fee, the 120 hours, and the state scholarships and TEACH programs that pay for both in 2026.
Click to zoomA child care teacher sits on the classroom floor with four toddlers, helping them play with stacking toys, the everyday work a CDA credential prepares you for.
Free CDA certification online usually means free training, not a free credential. The Child Development Associate credential is awarded only by the Council for Professional Recognition, and the Council charges $525 to apply. You can still get the whole thing free: state scholarships and TEACH programs pay the fee for many child care workers, and several states give the 120 hours of training at no cost.
This guide shows what the CDA requires, which programs pay for it in 2026 and how to avoid paying for training you could get free. How this guide was checked. Every fee, rule and pay figure below was read on the Council, state or federal page linked beside it on October 9, 2026.
| The figure | What it is | Source |
|---|---|---|
| $525 | the Council's fee to apply for a CDA, online only since 2026 | CDA Council |
| 120 hours | of training, at least 10 in each of 8 subject areas | CDA Council |
| 21 states | run TEACH programs that can help pay for it | TEACH |
The short version
- Only the CDA Council issues the CDA; sites selling "free CDA certification" usually sell training
- The fee is $525, and state scholarships pay it in many states if you work in child care
- Texas and North Carolina offer free training to eligible workers, and central Pennsylvania has a free class
- You need 480 hours of work with children; babysitting does not count
- Childcare workers earned a median $34,980 in May 2025
What is a CDA certification?
The Child Development Associate is a national credential for people who work with young children. The Council for Professional Recognition awards it after a third party checks your skills, and it does not give or endorse any training itself (CDA Council FAQs). The Council says it has issued more than 800,000 credentials and awards about 40,000 new and renewed CDAs a year (CDA Council).
There are five settings to choose from: center-based preschool, center-based infant and toddler, center-based birth to five, family child care and home visitor. Pick the one that matches the children you work with now, because your work hours and observation must match it.
For a single mom, the CDA is a short credential that many child care employers and state licensing rules recognize. The jobs for single moms guide compares it with other quick credentials.
What do you need to get a CDA?
The Council's requirements for a new CDA in 2026 (CDA Council FAQs):
- Education: a high school diploma or GED, or be a high school junior or senior in an early childhood career program.
- Training: 120 clock hours, with at least 10 in each of 8 subject areas. There is no time limit on when you took them.
- Experience: 480 hours working with children of your setting's ages within the 3 years before you apply, paid or volunteer.
- Portfolio: family questionnaires, reflective statements and resources, put together within 6 months of applying.
- Exam: 65 multiple-choice questions, up to 1 hour 45 minutes, at a Pearson VUE testing center.
Some hours do not count. Babysitting, before and after school programs, Sunday school and drop-in programs are not accepted for the 480 hours. Since December 2025, candidates with a qualifying exam result can be awarded the CDA without the in-person verification visit (CDA Council).
How much does a CDA cost?
The Council's fee for a new CDA is $525, online, for every setting. It rose on August 1, 2025, the first increase since 2013 (CDA Council pricing update). Paper applications ended on December 31, 2025, so the old paper price no longer applies (CDA Council).
The fee is nonrefundable and due in full when you apply. You also buy the Competency Standards book for your setting. Renewal costs $250 every 3 years, and expired CDAs back to January 1, 2016 can renew under an amnesty running until April 26, 2027 (CDA Council amnesty).
How can you get free CDA certification online?
Free CDA certification online takes two pieces: free training hours and someone else paying the $525 fee. The Council does not run scholarships, but it lists outside funders by state (CDA Council, find scholarships). Its FAQ says income-eligible candidates may get the state to pay the training and the fee (CDA Council FAQs).
The biggest funder is TEACH Early Childhood, which runs in 21 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, Vermont and Wisconsin (TEACH National Center). TEACH scholarships usually ask you to stay with your employer for a set time afterward (TEACH, how it works).
Two examples show how it works. Indiana's TEACH pays 100% of the $525 fee plus a $200 bonus (Indiana AEYC). It is for people working 20 or more hours a week in a licensed or registered program (Indiana AEYC, TEACH).
Michigan reimburses the $525 fee or the $250 renewal for workers earning $29.90 an hour or less (Michigan AEYC).
Where can you get free CDA training online or have the fee paid?
These programs offer free CDA certification online or in person, and each had a current page when this guide was checked. Most require that you already work in a licensed child care program.
| State | What is free | Who qualifies |
|---|---|---|
| Texas | The $525 fee; CIRCLE CDA gives the 120 hours for the preschool CDA | Fee: 30+ hours a week, $20 an hour or less. CIRCLE: staff of eligible programs |
| Georgia | The $525 fee and up to $500 of training | 30+ hours a week in a DECAL-licensed program, 3 months with the same employer, GaPDS trainer |
| Pennsylvania | The $525 fee, paid straight to the Council | 20+ hours a week in a STAR 1 or higher program |
| North Carolina | CDA coursework | Licensed child care educators |
| Indiana | The $525 fee plus a $200 bonus | 20+ hours a week in a licensed or registered program |
In Texas, the scholarship pays the Council fee directly (Texas Early Childhood Scholarships). CIRCLE CDA gives all 120 hours for the preschool CDA free to staff of eligible programs, such as Texas public schools, Head Start and Texas Rising Star providers (CLI Engage).
Georgia's DECAL scholarship has a fall window from October 1 to December 15, 2026 (DECAL Scholars). A separate training scholarship pays up to $500 (DECAL Scholars, training).
Pennsylvania's PA Key voucher pays the fee and the $250 renewal straight to the Council (PA Keys). PennAEYC also runs a free live online 120-hour cohort for educators in its Central Region who work 25 or more hours a week, with the next one starting January 5, 2027 (PennAEYC).
North Carolina offers free CDA coursework to licensed child care educators through a state grant (NC Division of Child Development). Florida's DCF gives free continuing education units for its online child care courses, but check with the Council before counting them toward your 120 hours (Florida DCF).
What if you do not work in child care yet?
Most routes to free CDA certification online require a current child care job, so a single mom starting from zero has two other routes. First, ask your local American Job Center about WIOA training funds. They may pay for training if you have a low income or a family on TANF, SNAP or SSI (CareerOneStop).
Second, look at community college CDA courses. Since July 1, 2026, Workforce Pell can pay for approved programs of 150 to 599 clock hours lasting 8 to under 15 weeks (U.S. Department of Labor, WorkforceGPS). A bare 120-hour CDA course falls below that minimum, so ask whether the college's program is longer and approved.
Another route is to take an assistant job first, earn the 480 hours there and then use the employer's scholarship. While you work, the childcare assistance guide covers help paying for your own children's care.
Is free CDA certification online legit?
Some are, but read what you are buying. The Council accepts training from any organization with early childhood teacher-preparation expertise that gives official documentation. It does not accept training from individual consultants or conference sessions (CDA Council, preschool pathway).
Watch for one common trap. The Virtual Lab School, a free course site built for military child care programs, gives completion certificates only to staff in military child and youth programs (Virtual Lab School). Civilians can read the lessons, but the hours will not count toward a CDA.
Also check any price you see online. At least one course seller still quotes the old $425 fee for the Pennsylvania voucher; the Council's fee is $525. If a site promises "free CDA certification" and asks for a card, it is selling training, not the credential.
What jobs can you get with a CDA, and what do they pay?
Childcare workers earned a median of $16.82 an hour, or $34,980 a year, in May 2025 (BLS, childcare workers). Some states and employers require a national credential such as the CDA. Preschool teachers earned a median of $38,140.
Head Start is one employer that requires it. Center-based Head Start teaching assistants need at least a CDA, or must be enrolled in a CDA program finished within 2 years, or in a degree program (42 U.S.C. 9843a).
State licensing rules can require it too. Florida requires one staff member with a CDA or equal credential for every 20 children in a licensed center (Fla. Stat. 402.305). Georgia lets a lead teacher qualify with a CDA or enroll within 6 months and finish within 18 months (Ga. Comp. R. 591-1-1-.31).
If you want a different fast credential, the free medical billing and coding guide covers another option. The best careers for single moms guide compares longer paths.

Frequently asked questions
How do you get a CDA for free?
Yes, in many states, if you work in child care. TEACH programs in 21 states and state scholarships in places like Texas, Georgia and Pennsylvania pay the $525 Council fee, and some states give the 120 training hours free. Without a scholarship, you pay the fee yourself even if the training was free.
How much does a CDA certification cost in 2026?
The Council for Professional Recognition charges $525 to apply for a new CDA online, for every setting. Renewal costs $250 every 3 years, and a printed certificate is $30. Training costs depend on where you take the 120 hours, and some states provide them free.
How long does it take to get a CDA?
It depends on your hours. You need 120 training hours and 480 hours of work with children within 3 years, then a portfolio, an exam and a decision. Once your exam score reaches the Council, a complete application can be decided in 1 to 3 business days if no verification visit is needed.
Can you get a CDA completely online?
You can do the training online and apply online, and the portfolio is uploaded digitally. But you still need 480 hours of hands-on work with children, and the exam is taken in person at a Pearson VUE testing center. Babysitting does not count toward the work hours.
Do I need a CDA to work in child care?
Not always. Many entry-level child care jobs do not require one. But Head Start teaching assistants need a CDA or must enroll in a program, and some states require it for certain roles, such as Florida's one credentialed staff member per 20 children.
