A smiling single mother reads a message on her phone at the kitchen table while her young daughter leans in beside her, the everyday side of using OurFamilyWizard.

A judge signs the parenting plan, and one line says both parents must communicate through OurFamilyWizard. For a single mom already stretching one paycheck across two kids, the first question is not about features. It is about the bill: what the OurFamilyWizard cost actually is, which plan the order needs, and whether she can get it free.

This is a research-based look, not a hands-on test. No one at Self Love Mom bought a plan for this article, and no reader stories appear below. Every price, rule and rating comes from OurFamilyWizard's own pages, two county court order forms, the app stores, the Better Business Bureau and Trustpilot, all read on October 28, 2026.

Where the money question lands

  • OurFamilyWizard costs $110 to $299.88 a year per parent, with no monthly option
  • Each parent pays for a separate account; you may pay for your ex, but you do not have to
  • A mom on SNAP, Medicaid, WIC or TANF can apply for a fee waiver herself
  • No free trial: the safety net is a 30-day refund on a first website purchase

What each plan costs you, and what two households pay together

OurFamilyWizard sells four tiers, all billed up front for one or two years (OurFamilyWizard plans and pricing). The OurFamilyWizard cost per plan is per parent, not per family. The company's FAQ is direct about it: each co-parent needs a separate subscription, though one parent is allowed to pay for both.

Plan 1 year 2 years Both parents, 1 year What it adds
Basic $110 $220 $220 ToneMeter, messages, calendar, expense log, journal, Info Bank, 1 GB storage, receive-only calls
Essentials $149.99 $276 $299.98 45 outbound call minutes a month, Writing Assistant, up to 12 OFWpay payments, 5 GB storage
Premium $216 $396 $432 Unlimited calls and storage, unlimited certified records, Event Import
Max $299.88 $551.76 $599.76 Option to record calls you place, with transcripts kept for 365 days

The Basic tier is less bare than it sounds. The help center lists ToneMeter, timestamped messages, the shared calendar, the expense log, the journal with GPS check-ins and unlimited PDF downloads inside Basic (OurFamilyWizard help center, subscription plans). What Basic lacks is calling out: Basic users can receive calls but cannot start them.

Payments are less clear. The help center says Basic can only receive OFWpay payments, while the pricing page lists unlimited OFWpay payments on Basic, so ask support before you count on sending money through it.

So for a single mom whose order only says "communicate through OFW," the lowest OurFamilyWizard cost of $110 a year may satisfy it. Read the order line by line before you upgrade. If it requires recorded calls, only Max records the calls you place, and Max is nearly three times the price of Basic.

What one parent pays OurFamilyWizard over two years, by plan Paying for a one-year plan twice versus prepaying two years, one parent: Basic 220 dollars either way; Essentials 299.98 versus 276 dollars; Premium 432 versus 396 dollars; Max 599.76 versus 551.76 dollars. Prices from the OurFamilyWizard plans page, October 28, 2026. Two years of OurFamilyWizard for one parent 1-year plan, paid twice 2-year plan, paid once Basic $220 $220 Essentials $299.98 $276 Premium $432 $396 Max $599.76 $551.76 Source: ourfamilywizard.com plans and pricing, read October 28, 2026
Bars start at zero. Each bar is one parent only; a co-parent buys a separate account. Two-year billing saves nothing on Basic and between $23.98 and $48 on the other plans.

Prepaying two years trims the OurFamilyWizard cost on three plans, but it ties up cash a single mother may need for rent. And a two-year plan only pays off if the order lasts two years, which is worth asking your lawyer or mediator about first.

The features a court order usually names

Court orders that require OurFamilyWizard tend to spell out which tools to use and how fast to answer. A form order posted by the 23rd Judicial Circuit in Jefferson County, Missouri, is a clear example (Jefferson County, Missouri, parenting app order form). It has each parent enroll within 48 hours, bans email, texts and phone calls between the parents, and requires a reply to any entry within 48 hours.

The same form tells parents to check the app at least every 24 hours, attach a receipt to every expense entry, and give Professional Access to the judge and guardian ad litem. It also says records kept by OurFamilyWizard come into evidence without further foundation unless someone files a written objection. For a single mother, that means every message she sends is a likely exhibit.

A Texas template from Comal County uses similar language, with one notable line: phone calls are allowed only in an emergency about the child that must be handled in under 24 hours (Comal County, Texas, OurFamilyWizard order template). It also says using OurFamilyWizard is not, by itself, a violation of an existing protective order, which matters for a single mom with a protective order in place.

Those are two county forms, not a statewide rule. The company says hundreds of judges in all 50 states order families to use it, which is its own marketing claim (OurFamilyWizard for courts). Whether your court requires it depends on your judge and your order, not on your state.

Here is how the tools map to a typical order:

  • Message board: messages can never be edited, deleted or retracted, according to the feature page (OurFamilyWizard product features). Each one shows when your ex first viewed it.
  • ToneMeter and Writing Assistant: ToneMeter flags heated wording in a draft; Writing Assistant, from Essentials up, suggests a calmer rewrite. Both help a single mom co-parenting with a narcissist or any ex who baits her, and a calm reply reads well to a judge later.
  • Calendar: holds the parenting schedule and formal requests to trade days, so a swap is on record instead of buried in texts.
  • Expense log and OFWpay: log a $40 field trip fee with a photo of the receipt and request reimbursement. OFWpay works only in the U.S., and the terms allow a flat per-transaction fee.
  • Journal and Info Bank: GPS check-ins prove you were at the exchange on time; the Info Bank stores insurance details, medical history and school schedules for both homes.

Children and extended family get free accounts with limited access, and child accounts cannot see the conversations between parents (OurFamilyWizard account types). Lawyers, mediators and therapists also join free through Professional Access, so adding your attorney never raises the OurFamilyWizard cost.

Getting it for $0: the fee waiver, step by step

The fee waiver is the part of the OurFamilyWizard cost picture many single moms miss. An approved parent gets everything in Essentials plus unlimited calling minutes, and if a court order requires recorded or transcribed calls, those features come at no cost too (OurFamilyWizard fee waiver program). That is more than Basic, for nothing.

You can qualify through any one of four routes:

  1. You receive SNAP, TANF, Tribal TANF, WIC, LIHEAP, SSI, Medicaid or the National School Lunch Program, in your own name.
  2. You have proof of indigence or in forma pauperis status from the court.
  3. You have free legal representation, such as a legal aid attorney.
  4. You have experienced domestic or intimate partner violence and are working with a qualified professional.

Benefits in a child's name do not count; the benefit must be under the parent's name. For the domestic violence route, the program asks for a signed letter on letterhead, dated within the past 12 months, from someone like a therapist, attorney, judge, social worker or shelter advocate. You do not need a lawyer to apply.

Timing matters when an order gives you 48 hours to enroll. A benefits-based application can be approved instantly through the verification service SheerID, or take a day or more if documents need review. In forma pauperis and pro bono applications take 5 to 7 business days. If your deadline is tight, tell your attorney or the court the application is pending, in writing.

Each parent applies separately; you cannot apply for your ex, and your waiver does not cover them. To renew next year on a benefits waiver, log in on the website and use the reapply link on the Billing page. It is not in the mobile app.

Military families have a separate deal. If either parent is active duty, retired military or a veteran, one parent pays and the second subscription is free, with a DD-214 or current orders as proof (OurFamilyWizard military family discount).

Refunds, auto-renewal and the 18th-birthday trap

OurFamilyWizard has no free trial. The company says you can try it "risk-free" because a first-time subscription bought on its website can be refunded in full within 30 days (OurFamilyWizard refund policy). The window is much shorter elsewhere: buy through Google Play and the refund request window is 48 hours, handled by Google. Buy through Apple and Apple decides.

No refund covers a renewal, a plan upgrade or an add-on. Under the terms, a subscription renews automatically for the same length until someone cancels it (OurFamilyWizard terms and conditions). After a plan expires, you get two grace logins over six months to reach your records, then the app asks for a renewal payment.

Here is the trap. The Jefferson County form requires each parent to keep renewing until the court ends OurFamilyWizard use or the youngest child turns 18. One Trustpilot reviewer complained that a parent whose child turns 18 partway through a renewal year still pays for the whole year. For a single mom whose youngest is 17, it is worth asking whether the order can end on the birthday, and switch off auto-renewal in account settings right after you subscribe.

Records, subpoenas and the price of printed proof

Most single mothers never pay for records. Every plan, Basic included, lets you download unlimited PDF reports, and many lawyers work from those. Premium adds unlimited certified records, notarized and mailed. Below Premium, a business records affidavit carries minimum fees of $20 to search, $20 to certify and 18 cents a page (OurFamilyWizard business records affidavits).

Run the numbers on a long case: a 300-page message history comes to at least $94, and the company can bill more for bulk copying. That single packet already costs more than the $66.01 a year between Essentials and Premium. If your case keeps returning to court and needs certified copies, Premium can come out ahead.

A subpoena works differently. OurFamilyWizard follows Minnesota law, asks for prepayment of an invoice for its time and expense plus the same minimum fees, and does not hand you the other parent's private information through your own report (OurFamilyWizard subpoena policy).

On privacy, the policy says the company does not sell or rent personally identifiable information, but it may sell aggregate data that cannot identify a person (OurFamilyWizard privacy policy). It also warns that a deletion request may be refused for messages, because they are a record for the other parent too. Assume anything you type stays.

Ratings, complaints and ownership, as of October 28, 2026

App users rate it well. The iPhone app shows 4.6 out of 5 from about 56,000 ratings (App Store listing). On Android it holds 4.6 stars from 16.3K reviews, with more than 500,000 downloads (Google Play listing).

Review and complaint sites measure something different. A BBB letter grade reflects how a business handles complaints, not how well the app works.

The Better Business Bureau rates the company F and lists it as not accredited, citing 25 complaints and a failure to respond to 21 of them (BBB business profile). Trustpilot, where anyone can post, shows 2.3 out of 5 from 101 reviews, 24 of them in the past 12 months, labeled "Poor" (Trustpilot reviews).

The recent Trustpilot complaints repeat a few themes: no monthly billing, no refunds for unused months, slow customer service, and one parent's account of chasing a fee waiver for over three months while out of compliance with a court order. The company replied to several of them. For a single mom, the lesson is practical: if you apply for a waiver, keep screenshots and ticket numbers to show the court.

The company itself is long-established. Founded in 2001 and based in Minneapolis, it says more than one million parents and professionals have used it (About OurFamilyWizard). It ran without outside money until April 2020, when growth equity firm Spectrum Equity invested and Nick VanWagner became CEO (OurFamilyWizard press release).

In May 2022 it bought Cozi, the family calendar app, from Dotdash Meredith (GeekWire). Keep that in mind when you see Cozi listed as an alternative: it belongs to the same company.

OurFamilyWizard vs TalkingParents, AppClose, 2houses and Cozi

If your order names OurFamilyWizard, you need OurFamilyWizard. If it says "a co-parenting app" or lets parents agree, the table below shows what each option charges a single mom, using each company's own pricing page on October 28, 2026.

App Price for one parent Free option Worth knowing
OurFamilyWizard $110 to $299.88 a year Fee waiver only Annual billing; each parent pays; certified records on Premium
TalkingParents $7, $16 or $32 a month, or annual 30-day trial; fee waiver Free tier ended March 30, 2026; parents can sit on different plans
AppClose $7.99 a month on the web, $83.88 a year prepaid 60-day trial, no card; fee waiver One plan with unlimited calls and call recording; certified records free
2houses $169.99 a year for the whole family 14-day trial One parent's subscription covers both parents and the kids
Cozi Free; Gold $39 a year; Max $79 a year Yes, with ads A family calendar and lists app, owned by OurFamilyWizard since 2022

The price gap is wide. A year of AppClose prepaid costs $83.88 and includes call recording, which OurFamilyWizard reserves for its $299.88 Max plan. TalkingParents bills monthly, so a single mom can stop paying the month an order ends. AppClose also says it gave more than 26,450 free accounts to parents in hardship and domestic violence survivors in 2026 alone.

What OurFamilyWizard still offers is a long track record: it has run since 2001, and its court page says judges in all 50 states order it. For the broader roundup of every app, including the free ones, see this guide to co-parenting apps and what each one costs. This page stays on one decision: whether OurFamilyWizard deserves your money.

Is OurFamilyWizard worth it for you? Six questions

Answer these in order. The first two settle it for most single moms.

  1. Does the order name OurFamilyWizard? If yes, the choice is made; the only question left is which tier the order requires. If it says "a co-parenting app," you may be able to propose a lower-priced one in writing.
  2. Do you get SNAP, Medicaid, WIC or TANF?Apply for the fee waiver before you pay anything. An approval gives you more than Basic for free.
  3. Does the order require calls, or recorded calls?Calls you start need Essentials; recording calls you place needs Max. If the order says nothing about calls, Basic may be enough.
  4. Is your ex likely to use it?OurFamilyWizard records what both parents do. If your ex ignores it, the record of unanswered messages may still help you in court, so keep posting.
  5. How long does the order run?Prepay two years only if it truly lasts two years, and turn off auto-renewal so a renewal never surprises you.
  6. Is the conflict high? For a hostile ex, a locked record is worth a lot, and pairing the app with a parallel parenting plan keeps contact to the minimum.

When the conflict is lower, the same tools still help two homes run one schedule. A written co-parent agreement can name the app, the reply time and who pays for it, so the OurFamilyWizard cost is split by agreement rather than argued over each year.

If your ex uses messages to provoke you, the tone tools and the permanent record work together best with a strict reply routine: answer once a day, about the kids only.

And if you are new to all of this, start with the basics of how to co-parent after separation before you pick a plan. The app supports a working plan; it cannot write one for you.

Questions single moms ask about OurFamilyWizard

Can my ex make me pay for his OurFamilyWizard account?

Not through the app. OurFamilyWizard bills each parent for a separate account, and paying for the co-parent is optional. Who pays can be set by the court, though, so read your order or agreement. If the order is silent, ask your attorney or mediator to add a line on cost before a dispute starts.

What happens if my fee waiver is still pending at the deadline?

Keep proof that you applied on time: a screenshot of the submission, the date, and any ticket number. Tell your attorney, or file a short written notice with the court if you have no lawyer. A documented, dated application is the clearest way to show you tried to comply on time.

Can my children use OurFamilyWizard without seeing our fights?

Yes. Child accounts are free and limited. Kids can view the family calendar, share journal memories and message family members, but they cannot read the conversations between the two parents. Setting one up for a 9-year-old lets them see which home they sleep at tonight without being pulled into adult disputes.

Does OurFamilyWizard show my ex when a message gets read?

Yes. Messages carry a first-viewed timestamp, so each parent can see when the other opened an entry. That cuts both ways: an order requiring a reply within 48 hours becomes easy to measure. Open messages when you have time to answer, and keep each reply short, factual and about the children.

Is the money-back guarantee the same as a free trial?

No. You pay first and ask for money back within 30 days, and only a first purchase made on the website qualifies. Buying in the Google Play app leaves a 48-hour window. If you want to test before paying, AppClose offers 60 days free and TalkingParents offers 30.
