What is TANF in Washington State?
TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) is a monthly cash benefit for families with children, run in Washington by the Department of Social and Health Services (WA DSHS, 2026). It pairs the check with support to help you get back on your feet.
The cash comes alongside WorkFirst, Washington's employment program. Together they cover the basics now while connecting you to childcare subsidies, job coaching, and emergency funds aimed at long-term stability.

Do you qualify for TANF in Washington?
You qualify if you live in Washington, have a child under 18 (or are pregnant), and your countable income falls under the limit for your household size (WA DSHS, 2026). Five things decide eligibility: residency, citizenship, a qualifying child, income, and assets.
The five eligibility basics
- Residency: you live in Washington State
- Citizenship: US citizen or qualified non-citizen; some non-citizens qualify for the State Family Assistance program instead
- A qualifying child: a child under 18 (or under 19 and still in high school), or you are pregnant
- Income: gross monthly earnings at or below the limit for your household size in the table below
- Assets: countable resources with an equity value of $12,000 or less (WAC 388-470-0005), and the entire value of one vehicle you use for transportation is excluded (WAC 388-470-0070)
These are the most a family can earn each month, before taxes, and still get a grant. They are set in WAC 388-478-0035 and have applied since August 1, 2024. Earn more than the figure for your family size and the grant stops.

How much cash will you get?
The maximum grant for a family of three with no other income is $706 a month, the payment standard in WAC 388-478-0020 that has applied since January 1, 2024. Amounts scale with household size. If you have other income, your grant is reduced, but rarely dollar for dollar.

Why working still pays
If you have a job, Washington subtracts the first $500 of your wages and then counts only half of the rest before figuring your grant. So taking work does not slam the door on your benefits, it eases them down as you earn. Unearned income, like unemployment, counts dollar for dollar.
What extra help comes with TANF?
TANF is more than the monthly check. If DCS collects child support for your kids, up to $50 a month ($100 with two or more children) is passed through to you, and since February 2021 that payment does not reduce your grant (DSHS EA-Z Manual, Child Support). The law that would pass through the full amount was pushed back to July 1, 2029 (RCW 26.23.035, as amended by 2025 c 402).
Support that comes with your grant
- Child-support pass-through: up to $50 or $100 a month of the support DCS collects reaches you on top of the grant
- AREN: Additional Requirements for Emergent Needs covers emergency rent or utility crises
- Diversion Cash Assistance: up to $2,000, once in any 12-month period, if you need fast help but not ongoing TANF (WAC 388-432-0005)
- WorkFirst supports: help with gas, educational expenses and clothing while you actively take part in WorkFirst
- Diaper Related Payment: $100 a month per household with a child under 3 on a grant of at least $10, paid automatically with no application (DSHS, Diaper Related Payment)

What is WorkFirst, and who is exempt?
Most adults on TANF must take part in WorkFirst, Washington's employment program, unless an exemption applies (DSHS WorkFirst Handbook, Exemptions). What you do, and for how many hours, is set in an Individual Responsibility Plan you make with a case manager.
WorkFirst activities can include job searching, skills or vocational training, community service, or finishing a GED. New applicants attend an orientation, then build the plan with their case manager.
Single moms, read this
If you are the parent of a child under 2, you can choose not to take part in WorkFirst. That infant exemption lasts 24 months over your lifetime, and after it runs out you still get it while a new baby is under 12 weeks old (WAC 388-310-0300).
Other exemptions cover a severe and chronic medical condition, caring for a child with special needs, or caring for an adult relative with a disability. Mention it at your first appointment, and do not let the work rule stop you from applying.
How do you apply, and what documents do you need?
You can apply four ways, including online through Washington Connection. After you file, you complete an interview by phone at 877-501-2233 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monday to Friday, or in person at an office (WA DSHS, 2026).

- By mail or fax: download the form from dshs.wa.gov and send it to your local office
Have your documents ready, because a missing one is the top cause of delays. You will need photo ID, Social Security numbers for everyone, proof of Washington residency, income verification, your children's birth certificates, and proof of pregnancy or guardianship if they apply.
Time limits, denials, and child-only TANF
Adults can receive TANF for a lifetime maximum of 60 months in Washington, though extensions exist. You may qualify if you are 65 or older, blind or disabled, work 32 or more hours a week, face family violence or homelessness, or have a child under 2. Another covers anyone who got TANF in a month since March 2020 when statewide unemployment was 7% or higher (WAC 388-484-0006). Child-only grants do not count against the clock.
If your time is running out or you are denied
- Approaching 60 months: call 877-501-2233 before benefits end to discuss an extension
- Denied: call your caseworker first, since many denials are fixed with one phone call
- Still disagree: request a fair hearing within 90 days of the notice (RCW 74.08.080), and keep your current benefits if you ask within the 10-day notice period (WAC 388-458-0040)

There is also Non-Needy (child-only) TANF, where a child gets benefits even if the caregiver cannot, for example an undocumented parent or a relative caregiver. This is a key option for mixed-status families where the children are US citizens but a parent is not.

How long does it take to get approved for TANF?
DSHS must process your application within 30 calendar days unless there is good cause for a delay. You complete an interview by phone at 877-501-2233, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., or in person at a Community Services Office. Once approved, cash goes onto your EBT card. Missing documents are the most common delay.
Can undocumented or mixed-status families get TANF?
Undocumented adults cannot get federal TANF, but US-citizen children in the home can still receive child-only benefits through Non-Needy TANF, which does not count against any time limit. Some immigrant adults who cannot get federal TANF, including qualified immigrants in the US for less than five years, may qualify for Washington's State Family Assistance instead (WAC 388-400-0010).
Do I have to do WorkFirst to receive TANF?
Most adults must take part in WorkFirst activities such as job search, training or work, with hours set in an Individual Responsibility Plan. You may be exempt if you have a child under 2, which uses a lifetime 24-month exemption, have a severe and chronic medical condition, or must care for a disabled relative.
