Grants for Single Mothers in Virginia, Sorted by Deadline

Lists of Virginia benefit programs tend to be sorted by category. Cash here, food there, housing further down. That ordering hides the thing that actually decides whether you get the money, which is what month it is.

Cooling Assistance shuts on 17 August. The tuition grant's priority deadline is 15 September. Fuel Assistance does not open until the second Tuesday of October.

So this page sorts grants for single mothers in Virginia by the calendar instead. What closes first comes first, and what has no deadline at all sits at the bottom where you can come back to it.

The one deadline that is actually close

The Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant pays up to $5,250 a year to full-time undergraduates, and the completed form has to reach your college financial aid office on or before September 15 for priority. Fall applicants who miss it can still file from September 16 to October 1, funded only if money remains, and December 1 is the deadline for spring-only students.

VTAG is unusual in that it is not need-based on its face. SCHEV does not ask for an income figure. What it asks is whether you are a Virginia domiciliary resident, enrolled full time, and attending one of 28 named private nonprofit colleges in the state.

One caution on that figure. The SCHEV chart is labeled 2026-27, and the page says outright that the actual awards depend on funding and the number of applicants, so $5,250 is the ceiling rather than a promise.

VTAG also stacks with the federal money. A Pell Grant is set by your Student Aid Index and your enrollment, not by what else you were awarded, so a state grant does not cut it. Aid that is packaged against leftover need, such as work-study, can still shift.

What Virginia actually pays in cash, and on which scale

Cash is where searches for grants for single mothers in Virginia tend to end up, and it is also the part the state explains least clearly online. Virginia does not have one TANF payment. It has two, and the split is geographic. The state sorts every county and city into Group II or Group III, and Group III localities pay more because they cost more to live in.

Here is the chart the caseworker is actually working from. It sits in Section 304 of the VDSS TANF manual, and the appendix carries a revision stamp of July 2022, which means these standards have not moved in four years while rent and groceries did.

That column is not a check. It is a ceiling. The manual calls it the standard of assistance, and the payment is the standard minus whatever countable income you already have. A mother of two in a Group III locality with no income is looking at $587. The same mother earning $200 a month countable is looking at the difference.

There is a second gate before any of that arithmetic happens. Gross monthly income above the figure below and the case is closed before a caseworker calculates anything.

One more piece of housekeeping. Group I was eliminated on 1 July 2017 and those localities moved into Group II. If a page you are reading still refers to three payment groups, it is running on information that is nine years old.

Why three websites give you three different numbers

The dollar figures attached to grants for single mothers in Virginia do not agree with each other, and the disagreement is not small. Search for Virginia TANF and three different figures come back at you: $389 on one site, $508 on another, $587 on a third. All three come from the state manual, but only the last is the current edition, and it is worth knowing where the other two came from.

The $389 is old. It was the Group III standard for a family of three in editions of the manual from 2000 until the 2016 increase, and it still appears in the current edition as a worked example, $489 minus $100 of countable income for a household of two. A benefits calculator that shows $389 as today's family-of-three maximum is a decade out of date.

The $508 figure is more recent. It was the Group III standard for a family of three in the July 2020 edition of the manual, before the increases that took the current chart to $482 and $587. Pages that still rank well for this search never updated it, which is how a retired number keeps circulating.

None of this is a reason to distrust every number you read. It is a reason to check the household size and the locality group attached to any Virginia figure before you plan a month around it.

When does the heating money open?

Not until the second Tuesday of October. Virginia runs energy help as three separate programs with three separate windows, and missing a window means waiting a full year. All three use the same income test: gross monthly income at or below 150 percent of the federal poverty level.

Notice how short the fuel window is. Roughly four weeks in mid-autumn, and then it is done until the following October. Benefit amounts come from a matrix in the DSS Energy Assistance manual rather than one flat maximum; the federal LIHEAP Clearinghouse lists Virginia's 2026 range as $181 to $634 for fuel, $50 to $700 for cooling, and up to $4,200 for a winter crisis.

If the bill is due before October, energy assistance is not your answer and you need faster emergency help instead.

Child care has no deadline, it has a queue

The Child Care Subsidy Program covers children under 13, or under 18 where a child has special needs, and pays a portion of the bill straight to your provider. You can apply on any day of the year. That is the good news, and it is where many articles stop.

Here is the part that matters more. Since 1 July 2024 Virginia has been required to run waitlists wherever demand exceeds available slots, and those lists are managed locality by locality. Your county may be running one while the county next door is not.

That quarterly confirmation is the trap. A mother who applies, waits, and hears nothing for four months can lose her place for administrative silence rather than ineligibility. Put a reminder in your phone the day you apply.

Four programs take applications year round through CommonHelp, and one application screens you for several of them at once. Grants for single mothers in Virginia are mostly this category rather than the competitive kind, which is why the word grant can mislead.

• TANF cash. The two-scale chart above. Apply through CommonHelp or your local Department of Social Services.
• SNAP. Food benefits on an EBT card, with an expedited track for households in immediate need.

Buying is the one place where grants for single mothers in Virginia stop being about monthly survival and start being about an asset. Virginia Housing runs a Down Payment Assistance Grant, and the state is direct about what it is: a true grant, never repaid. It is only usable alongside a bond FHA or conventional loan from Virginia Housing itself, so it is not something you can pair with any mortgage you like.

The income limits changed on 1 August 2026, which makes anything written before that month out of date.

Virginia Housing caps the grant at 2 percent of the sales price or appraised value with a Conventional bond loan and 2.5 percent with an FHA bond loan, and it has to go toward the down payment rather than closing costs. The federal and national programs that sit underneath this one work differently.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find out whether my county is Group II or Group III?

The grouping lives in Appendix 1 to Section 304 of the VDSS TANF manual, published on the state site. Ask your caseworker to confirm it when you apply, because the difference is roughly $100 a month for a household of three and it is decided entirely by where you live.

Can I collect TANF cash and SNAP at the same time?

Yes. They are separate programs, and CommonHelp screens for both from one application. TANF is cash on the two-tier scale above and SNAP is food on an EBT card. TANF cash counts as unearned income in the SNAP budget, so it can trim the food amount, but it never disqualifies you.

Is VTAG worth applying for if I am not enrolled yet?

Only if you will be enrolled full time this fall at one of the 28 eligible private nonprofit colleges. VTAG does not follow you to a public university or a community college, and part-time enrollment does not qualify. Check your school first, then the date.

What happens if I miss the October fuel assistance window?

You wait until the following October for fuel assistance itself, but Crisis Assistance opens on 1 November and runs to 15 March, and that covers heating equipment and security deposits. Overdue utility bills move into scope in January.

Are Virginia grants different from what other families get?

Few of the grants for single mothers in Virginia single out mothers at all. They are low-income family programs, and a one-income household often lands under the limits because income is measured against household size. The exception is the small number of private scholarships that name single parents directly.
