A nurse aide course can be as short as 75 clock hours under federal rules. The pharmacy technician exam from PTCB costs $129. Training for a Class A truck license has no federal minimum number of hours at all. Those low floors are why quick certifications that pay well exist, and why each one comes with fine print.

The fine print matters on one income. Of the eight credentials below, three lead to jobs with a May 2025 median wage above the $50,980 median for all US workers: truck driver, HVAC technician and computer support. The other five pay less, yet each can be earned in weeks or months, and several can be paid for by a nursing home, a workforce board or a Pell Grant.

$50,980 median pay, all US workers, May 2025 · 75 hours federal floor for nurse aide training · $129 PTCB exam fee · 8 weeks minimum Workforce Pell program length

For a wider menu of work that fits around school pickup, the guide to jobs for single moms covers flexible and remote roles. This page stays narrow: credentials you can earn fast, the fee, the proof you need before the exam and what the job pays.

How this list was checked, and what other lists get wrong

Every wage here is a national median from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, which now shows May 2025 pay and job projections for 2025 to 2035. A median is the middle of the pay range, not a starting wage. New workers usually begin below it, and pay changes from state to state.

Fees and requirements come from the organization that issues each credential, read on October 15, 2026. Where an issuer does not post a price on a public page, this guide says so instead of guessing. Any ranking of quick certifications that pay well is only as good as those two inputs.

Three errors that show up in ranking lists

  • Old wages. One ranking list gives medical assistants $38,000 next to job projections for 2023 to 2033. The current BLS median is $45,690.
  • Old outlooks. One list gives nurse aides $39,530 and 2% growth for 2024 to 2034. BLS now shows $42,260 and 3% growth for 2025 to 2035.
  • The wrong issuer. One list says the CNA comes from a national body. Your state approves nurse aide training and the competency test under federal rules, whoever writes the exam.

What the jobs behind quick certifications that pay well earn

Median annual pay in May 2025 for jobs reached through quick certifications Horizontal bars from zero. Computer user support specialists 61,860 dollars, HVAC technicians 61,010, heavy truck drivers 58,640, bookkeeping clerks 50,670, pharmacy technicians 45,750, medical assistants 45,690, phlebotomists 45,230 and nursing assistants 42,260. A dashed line marks the 50,980 dollar median for all US workers; only the first three bars cross it. Median yearly pay, May 2025 IT user support $61,860 HVAC technician $61,010 Truck driver (Class A) $58,640 Bookkeeping clerk $50,670 Pharmacy technician $45,750 Medical assistant $45,690 Phlebotomist $45,230 Nursing assistant $42,260 All US workers: $50,980 Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 wages
Darker bars sit above the all-worker median. A median is the middle wage for everyone in the job, not a starting wage.

The three jobs above the all-worker line share one trait: none is in health care. Truck driving pays a median $58,640, HVAC work $61,010 and computer user support $61,860. The health care credentials cluster between $42,260 for nursing assistants and $45,750 for pharmacy technicians.

That gap is the trade-off. The health care routes can start with a free nursing home course or a $129 exam, while the higher-paid routes ask for something else: a road-tested license, years of on-the-job learning after a refrigerant card, or a seat in a field where BLS projects fewer jobs.

Eight credentials, and the hoop attached to each

1. Nurse aide (CNA)

Federal rules require a state-approved nurse aide program of at least 75 clock hours, including at least 16 hours of supervised practical training (42 CFR 483.152). Check your state's required hours before you enroll, then pass the competency evaluation that goes with the program.

The money rule is what puts this credential first. A nursing home cannot charge an aide it employs, or has offered a job, for any part of the program, books included. If a facility hires you within 12 months after you finish, the state must repay your costs pro rata while you work there. Nursing assistants earned a median $42,260 in May 2025 (BLS).

2. Phlebotomy technician (CPT)

Phlebotomists earned a median $45,230 in May 2025, and BLS projects 7% job growth from 2025 to 2035 (BLS). The usual entry point is a short postsecondary program, not a degree.

The National Healthcareer Association's CPT exam asks for more than class time. You must show 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary or finger sticks on live people, and you renew every two years with 10 continuing education credits (NHA). Ask any program how students get those 40 live sticks before you pay.

3. Clinical medical assistant (CCMA)

Medical assistants had a median wage of $45,690 in May 2025, with 13% projected growth through 2035, the top growth rate among the eight jobs here (BLS).

To sit for the CCMA, you need a training program finished within five years, or one year of supervised medical assisting work in the last three. It also renews every two years with 10 continuing education credits (NHA). NHA's certification pages do not list the exam fee, so get it in writing from the school or check at checkout.

4. Pharmacy technician (CPhT)

PTCB charges $129 to apply for the CPhT and take its exam. You qualify through a PTCB-recognized training program or at least 500 hours of work as a pharmacy technician, and you renew every two years (PTCB).

The median wage was $45,750 in May 2025, and BLS lists a high school diploma as the typical entry education, followed by training on the job (BLS). Some states and employers require certification, so check with your state board of pharmacy first.

5. Class A commercial driver's license

Since February 7, 2022, new Class A applicants must finish entry-level driver training with a provider on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (FMCSA). The rule sets no minimum hours for theory or behind-the-wheel training. Instead, the instructor must document that you can do each skill (49 CFR Part 380, Appendix A).

That makes school length a business choice, not a legal one, so compare programs by price and by hours of actual driving. Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers earned a median $58,640 in May 2025, and BLS projects about 214,500 openings a year (BLS).

6. IT support: the Google certificate, then CompTIA A+

Google's IT Support certificate costs $49 a month in the US after a seven-day free trial, and many learners finish in three to six months, by Google's count (Google). That puts the bill at roughly $147 to $294. Coursera, which hosts the course, lists financial aid (Coursera).

Google says graduates who also pass CompTIA A+ earn a dual credential. A+ takes two exams, Core 1 for hardware and networking and Core 2 for operating systems and security, in either order (CompTIA).

The pay is solid, but the field is shrinking. Computer user support specialists earned a median $61,860 in May 2025, yet BLS projects computer support jobs to fall 3% by 2035 (BLS). Coursera's $70,000 entry-level figure comes from a job postings report, not from wages paid.

7. EPA Section 608 for HVAC work

Technicians who service equipment that can release refrigerant needs EPA Section 608 certification. There are four types: Type I for small appliances, Type II for high-pressure systems, Type III for low-pressure systems, and Universal for all three. The credential does not expire (EPA).

A 608 card alone does not make you an HVAC technician. BLS lists a postsecondary nondegree award plus long-term on-the-job training as the usual path. The median wage was $61,010 in May 2025, and jobs are projected to grow 11% by 2035 (BLS). The 608 is the quick part you can finish first.

8. QuickBooks ProAdvisor for bookkeeping

Intuit lets you sign up free for its ProAdvisor program, which includes free training (Intuit). Certified ProAdvisors then pass a shorter recertification exam every year (QuickBooks).

Bookkeeping clerks earned a median $50,670 in May 2025, just under the all-worker median. BLS projects a 6% decline by 2035, though it still expects about 144,100 openings a year (BLS). A free certificate costs only time, which suits a field where openings exist but the total is falling.

Two more fast credentials have their own guides. Medical coding is covered in free medical billing and coding courses. The child care credential is covered in free CDA certification online.

Quick certifications that pay well, side by side

Credential Who issues it What you must show first Cost on the issuer's page Median pay, May 2025

QuickBooks ProAdvisor Intuit Nothing; training is online Free sign-up $50,670
Pay is the BLS median for the job each credential leads to: nursing assistants, phlebotomists, medical assistants, pharmacy technicians, heavy truck drivers, computer user support specialists, HVAC technicians and bookkeeping clerks.

Which of these jobs are growing

Projected change in jobs from 2025 to 2035 Bars run right of zero for growth and left for decline. Medical assistants plus 13 percent, HVAC technicians plus 11, phlebotomists plus 7, pharmacy technicians plus 6, heavy truck drivers plus 4, nursing assistants plus 3, computer support specialists minus 3 and bookkeeping clerks minus 6. Projected job change, 2025 to 2035 0% Medical assistant +13% HVAC technician +11% Phlebotomist +7% Pharmacy technician +6% Truck driver +4% Nursing assistant +3% IT support -3% Bookkeeping clerk -6% Source: BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, projections 2025 to 2035
Gray bars are shrinking occupations. Openings still appear in them as workers retire or change fields.

When you compare these credentials, growth and openings are different numbers. Bookkeeping is shrinking, yet BLS still expects about 144,100 openings a year as workers retire or switch fields. Medical assistants pair the top growth rate here with about 109,700 openings a year, and phlebotomists with about 18,000.

Who pays for quick certifications that pay well

Paying cash for quick certifications that pay well can be the last resort. Four public routes and one employer rule can cover tuition, and some add help with child care.

Route Who it favors What it can cover Start at
WIOA training account Public assistance and other low-income adults Tuition at a provider on your state's approved list American Job Center
Workforce Pell Pell-eligible students 150 to 599 hours, 8 to under 15 weeks, if approved College financial aid office
Regular Pell Grant Undergraduates without a bachelor's degree Up to $7,395 in 2026-27 FAFSA
SNAP E&T People getting SNAP Training, plus child care, transportation and books SNAP office
Nursing home hire Aides employed or offered a job by a facility The whole CNA program, books included The facility
Who can pay for the training. Approval rules and money vary by state and by program; each route is explained below the table. Sources: US Department of Labor, Education Department, USDA, 42 CFR 483.152.

WIOA training accounts. At an American Job Center, staff spending federal WIOA Adult money must give priority to people on public assistance and other low-income adults (US Department of Labor). If you are approved, the center pays a provider on your state's eligible training list through an Individual Training Account (20 CFR 680.300).

Workforce Pell. Since July 1, 2026, Pell Grants can pay for approved workforce programs as short as 8 weeks (US Department of Education). Programs must run 150 to 599 clock hours over 8 to under 15 weeks and meet 70% completion and 70% job placement rates (WorkforceGPS).

Approval is slow. Each program needs sign-off from the governor and the Education Department, plus at least a year of operating history. The second program approved nationally was an 8-week clinical medical assistant course at Ivy Tech in Indiana (US Department of Education). Ask your college's aid office which short certificate programs that pay well qualify for Workforce Pell in your state.

Regular Pell. Under current funding, the maximum Pell Grant is $7,395 for 2026-27. It goes to undergraduates who have not earned a bachelor's degree, with exceptions for eligible workforce programs (Federal Student Aid). The guide to Pell Grants for single mothers walks through the FAFSA.

SNAP Employment and Training. All states get federal money to run SNAP E&T. If you get SNAP, it can pay for training and add help with child care, transportation, books and supplies (USDA Food and Nutrition Administration).

The nursing home rule. For CNA training, the employer route covered above can make the course free: get the job offer first, then train.

Before you pay a school

  • Ask which exam the course prepares you for, and who issues it.
  • Get the exam fee in writing, separate from tuition.
  • For phlebotomy, ask how students log 30 venipunctures and 10 capillary sticks.
  • For a CDL, confirm the school is on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry.
  • Ask the American Job Center whether the school is on your state's eligible training list.

Matching a credential to a one-income household

Start with the hours you can protect each week, then look at pay. Among quick certifications that pay well, the right one is the one you can finish without losing a paycheck along the way.

  • Need a paycheck within weeks: a CNA through a nursing home that trains its hires, since the course can cost nothing.
  • Want the top median on this list: IT support at $61,860 or HVAC at $61,010, knowing IT support jobs are projected to shrink and HVAC needs on-the-job training after the 608.
  • Can only study online after bedtime: the Google IT Support certificate at $49 a month, or free QuickBooks training.
  • Comfortable behind the wheel: a Class A CDL, with the school's price and driving hours compared side by side.
  • Prefer a lab or pharmacy counter: phlebotomy or pharmacy technician work, both with a May 2025 median above $45,000.

If you can manage a longer runway, the guide to careers for single moms covers paths that take a year or two. For two-year and four-year options, see degrees for single moms.

Training costs more than tuition when rent is due. The grants for single moms guide lists cash help that can cover bills while you study.

Questions people ask before they enroll

What are easy certifications to get that pay well?

Easy depends on what you already have. With no money, a CNA course paid by a nursing home that hires you can cost nothing. With time online, Google IT Support costs $49 a month. Among quick certifications that pay well here, IT support and HVAC jobs have the top May 2025 medians.

What is the difference between a license and a certification?

A license is permission from a government to do a job, such as a commercial driver's license from your state. A certification is proof from an organization, such as PTCB or NHA, that you passed its exam. Some states and employers turn certification into a requirement, as with some pharmacy technician jobs.

Can I get certified for free?

Sometimes. Nursing homes cannot charge aides they employ, or have offered a job, for nurse aide training. QuickBooks ProAdvisor training is free to start. WIOA training accounts, Workforce Pell and SNAP E&T can cover tuition at approved programs. Exam fees can still apply, such as PTCB's $129.

Do these certifications expire?

Most do. NHA's phlebotomy and medical assistant credentials renew every two years with 10 continuing education credits. PTCB certification renews every two years. QuickBooks ProAdvisors recertify every year. EPA Section 608 certification is the exception: it does not expire, so a refrigerant card earned now stays valid.

How long does a quick certification take?

Federal floors set the minimum, not the typical length. Nurse aide training starts at 75 clock hours. Workforce Pell programs run 8 to under 15 weeks. Google says many learners finish its IT Support certificate in three to six months. A Class A CDL has no federal minimum hours, so school length varies.
