A mother and daughter laugh together outdoors in summer, the season when Summer EBT helps single moms keep kids fed.

When the school year ends, so do the free breakfasts and lunches your kids count on, and the grocery bill jumps right when your budget has the least give. Summer EBT was built for exactly that gap. It is a federal program that puts grocery money on a card for each eligible child, every summer.

For a single mom, the best part is this: in most states, you do not have to apply. If your family already gets SNAP, TANF, or free school meals, your child is usually signed up automatically. This guide covers the 2026 amount, who qualifies, which states are in, and what to do if you need to apply. For the year-round food benefit, see our guide on how SNAP benefit amounts work. All figures verified June 2026.

What you need to know first

  • Summer EBT (also called SUN Bucks) gives $120 in grocery money per eligible child for summer 2026
  • Most single-mom families get it automatically: no application if you already have SNAP, TANF, or free or reduced-price school meals
  • The money loads onto an EBT card and works at any store that takes SNAP. It does not reduce your regular SNAP benefit
  • 37+ states, D.C., and several tribes are participating in 2026. A dozen states opted out, including Texas, Florida, and Indiana
  • If your child is not automatic, you can apply through your state, but deadlines vary, so check now

What is Summer EBT, and how much is it in 2026?

Summer EBT gives families $120 in grocery benefits per eligible child for summer 2026, set by the USDA in its annual benefit levels (USDA FNS, 2026 Benefit Levels). The money lands on an EBT card and replaces some of the food support kids lose when school meals stop for the summer.

You will see it called two things: Summer EBT and SUN Bucks. They are the same program. It is permanent now, not a pandemic measure, and 2026 is its third summer since launching in 2024.

The $120 applies across the 48 contiguous states. Because food costs more there, Hawaii issues $189 per child and most U.S. territories issue $180 per child for 2026. One card can hold benefits for several kids, so a single mom with three children could see $360 for the summer.

Do single moms have to apply, or is it automatic?

For most single moms, it is automatic. Children are enrolled with no application if they already receive SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR, or if they are certified for free or reduced-price school meals (USDA FNS, 2026). If that is your family, the card simply arrives in the mail.

Who is automatically enrolled

Your child is signed up with no application if any of these already apply to your household this school year.

  • You receive SNAP (food stamps), TANF cash assistance, or FDPIR
  • Your child gets free or reduced-price school meals through the National School Lunch Program
  • Your child attended a participating school and your household income was verified as eligible
  • Some states also auto-enroll children on income-eligible Medicaid

If none of those fit but your income is low, you are not shut out. You can submit a Summer EBT application through your state, which is covered in section 5. Already on SNAP and curious how the two compare? See our guide on how SNAP and TANF differ.

Which states have Summer EBT in 2026?

More than 37 states, the District of Columbia, and several tribal nations are running Summer EBT in 2026, covering the large majority of U.S. children (USDA FNS, 2026). Each state decides every year whether to take part, so participation can change from one summer to the next.

A dozen states opted out for 2026 and will not issue Summer EBT this summer:

  • Not participating in 2026: Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah
  • Tribal exception: Oklahoma opted out, but five tribal nations there run their own Summer EBT programs

If you live in an opted-out state, your kids will not get Summer EBT this year, so lean harder on year-round SNAP and free summer meal sites. In Indiana, for example, our guide to food stamps in Indiana walks through the benefit your family can still get.

When do you get the money in 2026?

Most states begin loading 2026 benefits onto cards between May and early June, though some run issuance through the summer (USDA FNS, 2026). The exact date depends on your state, and automatic cases usually arrive before application-based ones.

States send the $120 one of two ways. Some issue it as a single lump sum. Others split it into installments, often $40 a month across three summer months. Either way, the total per child is the same.

Use it before it expires

Summer EBT benefits sit on the card for a limited window, commonly around 122 days, and unused money is removed after that. Lost or stolen Summer EBT benefits usually cannot be replaced, so treat the card like cash and spend it on groceries while it is active.

How do you apply if your child is not automatic?

If your child is not auto-enrolled, you apply through your state’s Summer EBT portal, and most applications take only a few minutes (USDA FNS, 2026). Deadlines vary widely by state, with some closing in August and others in early fall, so it is worth checking the day you read this.

  • Find your state’s Summer EBT page by searching your state name plus “Summer EBT” or “SUN Bucks”
  • Have your details ready: each child’s name and date of birth, their school, your address, and your household income
  • Confirm your child’s school has your current address, since that is where the card is mailed
  • Submit before your state’s deadline, which can be as early as mid-August in some states
  • Watch the mail for the card, then activate it like any EBT card

A quick reminder for working moms between jobs: a drop in income can newly qualify your family, so reapply if your situation changed. Our guide on food stamps while on unemployment covers that overlap.

Does Summer EBT affect your SNAP or other benefits?

No. Summer EBT is a separate, extra benefit, and it does not reduce your SNAP, cut your TANF, or count against other assistance (USDA FNS, 2026). It is designed to stack on top of what you already receive, not replace it.

It also pairs with free summer meals. The same federal effort runs SUN Meals, which serve free breakfast and lunch to kids at parks, schools, and libraries all summer, with no sign-up. A single mom can use the $120 card for groceries at home and free meal sites when the kids are out.

If groceries are still tight, stack every layer you qualify for. WIC covers little ones under 5, SNAP covers the whole household year-round, and our single mom resources hub points to more help in one place. Using several programs together is exactly how the safety net is meant to work.

What should single moms do right now?

With benefits already loading for summer 2026, a few minutes of action now makes sure you do not miss your $120 per child (USDA FNS, 2026). Most of this is about making sure the system can reach you.

Your summer 2026 checklist

  • Confirm your address with your child’s school and your SNAP or benefits office, so the card reaches you
  • Check your state’s status in section 3. If you are in a participating state, watch the mail
  • If you are not automatic, apply through your state portal before the deadline
  • Find free SUN Meals sites near you for breakfast and lunch all summer
  • Spend the card within its active window so no benefit is lost

You earned this support, and your kids deserve to eat well through the summer. A card in the mail and a free lunch at the park can take real pressure off a hard season.

FAQs: Summer EBT 2026 for single moms

How much is Summer EBT per child in 2026?

Summer EBT is $120 per eligible child for summer 2026 across the 48 contiguous states. Hawaii issues $189 and most U.S. territories issue $180 to reflect higher food costs. One card can hold benefits for all of your eligible children at once.

Do I need to apply for Summer EBT as a single mom?

Usually not. If your child gets SNAP, TANF, or free or reduced-price school meals, they are enrolled automatically and the card arrives in the mail. Only families whose children are not already certified need to submit a state application.

Which states are not doing Summer EBT in 2026?

Twelve states opted out for 2026: Alaska, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah. Children in those states will not receive Summer EBT, though five Oklahoma tribes run their own programs.

Does Summer EBT lower my regular SNAP benefit?

No. Summer EBT is a separate benefit that stacks on top of SNAP, TANF, and WIC. It does not reduce your monthly SNAP amount or count against any other assistance. It is extra grocery money for the summer months, nothing is taken away.

When will the 2026 Summer EBT money arrive?

Most states begin loading benefits between May and early June 2026, with automatic cases first. States pay the $120 either as a lump sum or as about $40 a month over three months. Check your state’s Summer EBT page for its exact deposit schedule.
